Farmers Trees for Bees
Smart farming for healthy bees - bee-friendly land management
Federated Farmers has established the ‘Trees for Bees NZ’ campaign to ensure that honey bees have the opportunity to gather sufficient pollen and nectar, providing the vitamins and minerals required to maintain optimum hive strength and a viable pollinating bee force.
The ten regional Bee Plant Guides for this campaign are the result of collaboration between Federated Farmers, Landcare Research, the Oceania Pollinator Initiative, and many beekeepers, farmers and nursery owners.
The criteria for selecting the plants for the short list in each region were that they must be attractive to bees, preferably native (or alternatively non-invasive exotics), and practical for farmers to grow.
When choosing what to plant in waterway margins, windbreaks, along roadsides, farmers can now choose bee friendly trees and shrubs from these lists. Many shelter and erosion control plants also produce abundant flowers to feed bees so choosing multi-purpose plants is smart farming for healthy bees.
